MY MONHEGAN

Last month's newsletter generated a small flurry of email responses. Seems there are few readers who share my frustration with mediocre grammar. Thanks to all who responded!

Susan Sandor reminded me that I had not reported back on my July trip to Maine - Monhegan, ME to be exact. This was my second week-long stay on Monhegan. (Special thanks to my artist friend, Jerry, for the invite.) On the ferry ride from Port Clyde, ME to Monhegan, I met a woman who stays on Monhegan for over a month every year. She insists that guests who come to visit her stay at least two nights so that they can have one entire day without having to rush to catch a ferry. I agree with her - to truly experience the full impact of Monhegan living, you need to stay overnight.

Things move much slower on Monhegan - even slower than on mainland Maine. And, since you have to walk to wherever you want to go AND cell phones don't always work, you have to plan your daily activities based on word-of-mouth communication or via flyers left at one of the inns, restaurants, or shops. There is also a message board of sorts where people can leave messages, posters, and business cards on the side of an old building in the center of town. Here you can get all sorts of information, from artists' gallery hours to massages offered by a therapist who resides at Monhegan House.

Monhegan 2009This year I met some new people and revisited some folks I had met last year. (People tend to revisit Monhegan about the same time each year.)

Here is a photo of a family I met last year while hiking. They live in Falmouth, ME and came back to Monhegan for a few days while I was there. (Lucky me.) We celebrated Patti's birthday and took an around-the-island tour. Patti is holding flowers just before she, her husband, and daughter boarded the ferry to take them home. It is a tradition on Monhegan that islanders give you flowers as you board the ferry. As the boat moves away from the dock, you throw the flowers into the water. If the flowers float back towards Monhegan, it means that you will return.

Monhegan 2009The next photo is taken at the top of the island where the lighthouse and museum are located. From here you can see most of the western portion of the island. The large building in the center of the photo is the Island Inn, one of two inns on the island. (The other places to stay are private homes, rooms, and boarding houses. You can also see Manana, a small, uninhabited island, once used by the Coast Guard.

I look forward to going back next year. Monhegan is one of those places you either love or hate. If your life revolves around TV and participatory sports, you will be hard pressed to find something to do on Monhegan. If you like to hike, have neighborly chats, watch amazing sunsets, "go with the flow", paint, read, or just sit and think, you will be very happy on Monhegan!
