Newsletter
______________ CAN IT BE SEPTEMBER ALREADY? Not only is it September - it is the MIDDLE of September. Did you wonder why you had not received your September newsletter before this? Well, I went on a vacation! Yes, I took off a whole week and drove up to Maine to visit my ceramics teacher who rents a home near Blue Hill, ME. I hadn't been to Maine for over 12 years and it was so wonderful to be back! Maine is probably the only place (the Maine coast - have to be close to water!) I have ever traveled that I could actually move to. ______________ MY STORY PART II (if you missed last month's newsletter, go to www.newhopepennsylvania.com/newsletters/ Last month we were talking about following our intuition... I won't go into details about meeting George although we both enjoy telling the story. Suffice it to say that we have been together ever since our first meeting. My first few years in New Hope were not terribly "New Hopish." I was working in the corporate computer world in a managerial sales position. I spent a lot of time in New Jersey where our offices were located. On weekends, I was learning the art of gardening from my new neighbors Steven and Scott (I wrote about them in Faces & Places some time ago,) who were becoming good friends. George moved in about a year after we met. We refinished the basement so he could have his "man cave." We lived our lives. I had been having hip/leg/back pain for a number of years - probably since 1990. It was intermittent so I didn't worry about it too much. The pain gradually increased to the point where I was not getting a good night's sleep. In 1994 I started visiting doctors, seeking relief. I was tested and retested for all sorts of things - MS, cancer, scary things. When, finally, I was diagnosed with a degenerative hip, I was actually relieved that it was something "fixable." However, it took me over a year of walking with a cane to finally agree to a hip replacement. One day, I looked out the window and realized that, unless I did something, I would never walk again like I used to. After the operation, I felt better immediately. Other than the surgical pain, there was NO pain in my hip area! Yeah! Within five weeks I was on a plane to watch my dad be inducted into the Pittsburgh Bowling Hall of Fame. Within five months, I was snow skiing (don't tell my doctor.) And two years after the surgery, George and I participated in a 3-day bike ride from Boston to New York. What is important in this story is that during my recovery from hip surgery, I got this very strong internal message to make a change to my life. I thought, "OK, you have four to six weeks of sitting at home. You can think about what you want to do with the rest of your life." Guess what? I chickened out! I didn't even know where to begin. I had always thought about having my own business, but what would that be? So, I went back to doing the same things I had done before - working long hours, not doing anything that fulfilled me spiritually, not taking the time to get involved in my community. Then, in 1999, just five months after George and I got married, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This time, I realized I might not get a third chance to make changes to my life! This is where my New Hope life REALLY begins. More next month ... WEBSITE GIFT Some of you many know that the NewHopePennsylvania.com and LambertvilleNewJersey.com domains were owned by local businessman Keith David (he used to co-own the Mansion Inn) Well, Keith is very graciously and generously turning over the ownership to me. Not that much will change on the website. I just wanted you all to know and I wanted to thank Keith publicly! Thanks, Keith! :-) ______________ READER FEEDBACK Here are a few messages sent to me by loyal readers: I love your newsletter. It's cozy just like the area. I grew up in Bucks County, and am hoping to move back.... - N. Your story was wonderful to read! It is refreshing to read something nice and cheery!! Looking forward to reading more next month. :) - D. I would guess that most people who reply would be negative in their comments (hopefully I'm wrong). So my e-mail says, yes, continue with your story. Unless you go behind closed door, we'll get more information and flavor about a great little town with a semi old fashioned main street. How can we lose. - T. ______________ Please no longer send email to me at editor@NewHopePennsylvania.com From now on, please send email to editor@bullockmarketing.com ______________ UPCOMING EVENTS (Refer to the Calendar of Events or the Press section for more information on the events listed below.)
