A NEW YEAR, A NEW PRESIDENT, A NEW ATTITUDE
Like many of you, I was glued to the television on Tuesday - watching the inauguration of our new president and the celebrations that followed. Throughout the day there were quite a few times when I had tears in my eyes and I asked myself, "Marilyn, what is making you cry?"
I realized that it was several things: I was moved by the hundreds of thousands of people who traveled from all over the world and battled the crowds just to be in Washington, DC for the inauguration. I was in awe of the coming together of so many "prior to now" disparate groups of people. I was overwhelmed by the historic significance of the day and of knowing that the United States is now, somehow, forever changed by what I was witnessing. Most importantly, I was encouraged by the underlying message of hope that was expressed by so many people who were interviewed and, then, by President Obama himself in his acceptance speech. More than I have ever felt in my life, I am motivated to do my part to be a better American citizen.
And how can I, how can WE make a difference? ONE thing we can do right now is to start changing our attitudes. Our attitudes are, perhaps, the ONLY things in life we truly have any control over. We have the power to choose day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute how to react to people, situations, and events.
For my part, I choose finding the good in people instead of judging them. I choose to offer love and support instead of anger and rejection. I choose to be accountable for my actions. I choose looking at the cup half full. I choose honesty and integrity. I choose exploring new ways of doing things that will make be a better person. I choose improving communication with those around me. I choose feeling empowered to be the best I can be. I choose optimism. And I choose PEACE - both inner and outer.
What do you choose?
