JULIE, JULIA AND MARILYN

I go to the movie theater maybe six times a year max. It's not that I don't enjoy movies; it is just that I seem to have so many other things that are pressing, I usually wait to see movies on TV or DVD.

A few weeks ago I went with my friend Barbara to the Newtown Theater to see the film Julie & Julia. For those of you who have not seen the film, it is actually two intertwined story lines. One is of Julia Child's years in France, her culinary training, and the connections she made that led to her series of cookbooks. The other story is about Julie Powell, an unhappy New York customer service representative, who comes up with the idea to cook every recipe (524 of them!) in Julia Child's book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking within a 365-day span and to blog about her cooking experiences (hilarious.) Meryl Streep totally captures the essence of Julia Child, Stan Tucci portrays her loving husband, Paul, and Amy Adams is delightful as Julie Powell. If you haven't seen the movie and you enjoy comedies, I highly recommend Julie & Julia. I still laugh out loud when I think about the onion scene... (In the theater, there were at least three of us who couldn't stop laughing at this scene - Barb and I and a guy sitting behind us who REALLY enjoyed the movie!)

I am old enough to remember Julia Child's early years as television's "French Chef." As a pre-teen I spent a considerable amount of time at my maternal grandmother's house. I recall sitting in her living room (by myself) watching Julia Child and being mesmerized by this tall, gregarious, and sometimes "tipsy" woman as she prepared meals for her TV audience. Even at a young age, I recognized what a character Julia Child was.

It would be such a perfect story if I told you that in later years I became an amazing cook who spends hours on end preparing interesting and succulent meals for my delighted dinner guests.

Ha! That would not be me, honey. The simpler the better is my motto. (And take-out is best.) I avoid recipes:

  • that take longer than half an hour to decipher
  • that take longer than half an hour to prepare
  • that list more than five ingredients
  • with ingredients I cannot spell, pronounce, or have to look up in a dictionary

Capers are a good example of what you won't be finding in my pantry. What are they anyway? I have no clue what food group they belong to and, if you put a gun to my head and said "Go find the capers", I'd be a goner because I have no idea in which aisle to find them.

Another reason my cooking skills are lacking is that I have a sensitivity to garlic. Sigh! Just YOU try to find a decent entree recipe (with less than five ingredients of course) that does not include garlic.Garlic - I don't like the smell or taste of it.

I can smell garlic on people too. There have been times when I am in an exercise class standing next to someone who had heavy garlic the night before. I have to breathe through my mouth just to make it through the class!

By the way, I have no such aversion to chocolate, which may be why I can make a WICKED good chocolate chip cookie.
