THE MOVE PART II
OK, I am in much better spirits than I was last newsletter. I have been in my condo for over three weeks and am finally feeling comfortable here. My Bichon Poo, Lexi, is also settling in.
How do I know that?
In our old house, when I would wake up in the morning, Lexi would get up too. (She sleeps in bed with me.) While I showered, Lexi would go downstairs to find a comfy place to snooze until it was time for our morning walk. Since moving, Lexi has not left my side. When I get up in the morning, she stays in the bed and doesn't go downstairs until I do.
One day last week, for the first time since the move, Lexi went downstairs first! When I finally made it downstairs to take her for a walk, I found her on the couch curled up in a ball, looking very relaxed.
Yeah! When Lexi is happy, I am happy. Hmmmm. Or, maybe it works the other way around?
There is more good news! All the boxes are gone or out of sight and all the rooms, except for my office, are pretty much organized. The office is still crammed with too many books, too much paper, and enough computer equipment for 2 or more people.
So, what else is new?
Isaac Asimov has said," The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change..."
Philosophically speaking, perhaps my divorce and move came about to awaken me to new opportunities and to accept change as a good thing. If it is going to happen anyway, I might as well be happy with whatever is happening, right?
I am in the process of looking at my career and where that might take me. (And being OK with whatever direction I go.) The most recent opportunity that came along is doing some work with New Hope Arts - specifically, promoting New Hope Arts' Showcase the Arts and "Savor New Hope."
If you have never been to New Hope during the weekend of Showcase the Arts, I hope you will consider coming next weekend (Aug 27 - 29.)
I was on the board of New Hope Arts, Inc. when founder Robin Larsen started the yearly Showcase the Arts event. It started as a Bastille Day celebration in July of 2001. Over the years it developed into an entire weekend of music, food, art exhibits, and children's activities. I think it was in 2003 or 2004 that the name changed to Showcase the Arts. Showcase took a break in 2009 but is back this year in full force.
Some months ago, award-winning photographer Bob Krist took 60 photographs of well-known local figures. Those images are now on display at the New Hope Arts Center in an exhibition appropriately titled, "New Hope: In Character." You can view the exhibit this Thursday - Sunday from 12 - 5. You can attend the formal reception on Friday, August 27 from 7 -9. Cost is $15.
There are a lot of other activities: children's activities at the Free Library, a Photography workshop, a self-guided tour of art galleries and on-location plein air artists. However, the pièce de resistance is the "Savor New Hope" event on Sunday, August 29th. There will be over 16 local restaurant chefs participating in this culinary event of the year. Wine, beer, food, music - all on Stockton Avenue, which will be closed to traffic all day Sunday! Tickets are $45 in advance and include admission to the Krist exhibit on Friday night!
Go to www.NewHopeArts.org for details and tickets.
I hope you can attend some of the festivities. I always enjoy running into people who read my newsletter! If you see me this weekend, be sure to say "Hi, I read your newsletter!"
THANK YOU FOLKS!
My last newsletter prompted a lot of people to send me well wishes for all the changes going on in my life.
I say, "Thank you!" Your comments, suggestions, and offers of support were much appreciated.
One local poet , Judith Lawrence, shared a poem that she wrote after she moved to a much smaller space. I asked if I could reprint her poem here and she said yes.
Melting Down With Thoreau
At the fork in the road
in an eventful long life,
my decision to downsize
The move was fraught
with calamity, danger,
intrigue, loss, gain, betrayal,
hopelessness and hopefulness,
along with the usual cast of characters
spinning through the melee.
What saved me,
was my Irish bullheadedness,
and the belief
I could move mountains,
and so I did.
In the end,
or is it the beginning…
old loves have endured,
new acquaintances have begun.
I’ve been given a spiritual awakening poem
from a dear poet to treasure,
and had a chance encounter
with Thoreau’s Walden in a Laundromat.
So here we sit,
just me and Thoreau,
taking in the night air,
rocking slowly on my deck rocker,
the sounds of men and women squabbling,
a dog barking in the distance,
yet disconnected from the world.
Yes, we can escape our tethers,
lay aside the things, people and events
that choke the soul,
face life with all its mysteries
yet to unfold.
