HEROS IN THE FAMILY

Last weekend I took a quick trip to Pittsburgh, which is where I was born and lived many years of my early life. My sister, who lives outside of Atlanta, GA, was visiting my mom, so we had a family reunion of sorts. (I also got to visit with my brother and my father and that was very special.)

The really sad and frustrating part of the trip was seeing my mom having to care for her alzheimer-suffering husband. He was not the sweetest guy BEFORE he got alzheimers. Imagine nastiness multiplied by about a hundred! My mom is a saint and I admire and respect her for her devotion and patience. She is my hero.

Whenever I start to complain about my own issues, all I have to do is remember the many heros we have in our own families, our neighborhoods, and, of course, the military heros here and abroad.

This Memorial Day, let us offer our thanks and repect to heros of all kinds. If you are one of them - Thank you!

A BIRTHDAY AND A BOOK

Sunday, May 29th is my sister's birthday. Happy Birthday, Trish.

Trish has been writing a book for a lot more years than she cares to reveal. It is called True Grits, A Yankee's View of the South. It is a true (and very funny) story based on her move to the South tweny some years ago and stories about the intervening years. I told Trish I wanted to publish some of her book so that she could get some feedback from us Yanks. So, here is a short exerpt. To read more, click on the link that follows. To give feedback to my sister, email her at tgrindel@comcast.net and wish her Happy Birthday while you are at it!

"If you're holding my furniture hostage, Frank, you probably can't get more than a hundred bucks for all of it," I replied sarcastically.

"No, no, nothing like that," he chuckled. "The truck broke down outside Chattanooga, and I'm waiting to get it fixed. It's getting late, so I'm thinkin' I'll wait until tomorrow to drive down there."

"Well, Frank, I'm thinkin' if you wait till tomorrow to get here, you should probably sleep with one eye open tonight," I said, more calmly than I felt. Three days of eating out of cans and sleeping on concrete had sucked my good humor dry.

"I understand it's not your fault the company is short on drivers and you haven't had a day off in two weeks. And I understand it's not your fault the truck broke down. But I've been waiting for my belongings for three days. I have food, but nothing to cook it in, a shower but no soap. I have third-degree burns from sleeping on carpet that smells like a Taco Bell dumpster, and the streetlight shining in my face every night is burning holes in my retinas. I started a new job today wearing clothes that are now considered a public health risk. I don't care if you have to pull that truck with a rope around your neck, if you don't have my furniture here before this day is over, I will hunt you down, remove all of your appendages, and stuff them up your butt."

He knocked on my door two hours later.
